International Symposium on Tropical Rainforest Conservation

      On October 24, 2022, the first phase of the international symposium on tropical rainforest conservation, with the theme of ‘Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Ecological Value Realization”, was held in Haikou. This symposium was co-organized by Hainan Institute of National Park, Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Administration, People's Government of Wuzhishan, and Hainan Green Island Rainforest Public Welfare Foundation.

      This symposium aims to establish an international platform for cooperation and exchange, coordinate scientific research efforts, and fully promote the high-quality construction of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.

      In recent years, the CPC Committee and People’s Government of Hainan Province have been placing ecological civilization among top priorities. By building Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park and exploring the paths to turn clean water and green mountains into gold and silver mountains, Hainan has been witnessing improvement in ecological environment and biodiversity. It’s necessary to bolster international cooperation and joint research to establish sound mechanisms to realize the value of ecological products, promote accounting and application of gross ecosystem product (GEP), improve compensation mechanisms for ecological protection so that a favorable ecological environment would become a "golden rice bowl" for future generations.

      During the symposium, representatives of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, international organizations and research institutions, including many well-known experts and academicians at home and abroad, held discussions on gibbon protection, tropical rainforest biodiversity, national park construction, and ecological value transformation and realization paths in order to solve existing problems and promote cooperation and exchanges.

      This symposium witnessed the official establishment of the Global Gibbon Network (GGN) , with its first secretariat being set up at Hainan Institute of National Park, as well as the release of the List for Priority Protected Species in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.
